AI-driven transformation and the fourth industrial revolution

How AI changes us - and should change us

Artificial intelligence is fundamentally reshaping both our daily lives and the way we work — and as a leader, I feel a real responsibility to stay ahead of this shift. This means actively educating myself on these new tools, preparing early rather than reactively, and helping my team and our structures adapt alongside these rapid developments. It's about staying open to a genuinely new era of work, growing with the pace of change rather than resisting it, and ensuring that both I and those around me are equipped to thrive within it.

AI Is Reshaping Medicine and Research

What strikes me most right now is how quickly artificial intelligence is transforming both our everyday lives and our professional world. In medicine and science, so much of our time goes into administrative work — tasks that pull us away from our actual core expertise. New AI tools now offer a real opportunity to lighten that load, freeing up more time for the work that truly matters: patient care and scientific discovery.

At the same time, I believe it’s essential to strike the right balance between human expertise — built on years of experience — and these new tools.

On the scientific side, the potential is just as significant. Big data is a major focus across our field, and we now have far greater capacity not only to collect data, but to analyze and apply it meaningfully. With these new tools, we’re able to tackle new projects and challenges at a pace that would have been unimaginable just a few years ago.

Rethinking How We Teach and Train the Next Generation of Physicians

For decades, medical and academic education has relied on the same format: the frontal lecture, delivered to a large, mostly passive audience. That model is fading — and rightly so. As artificial intelligence and digital media reshape how we access and process information, teaching is shifting from one-directional instruction to interactive, participatory learning.

Students today can already retrieve facts instantly; what they need from us is guidance in applying, questioning, and synthesizing that knowledge. This opens the door to podcasts, webinars, case-based discussions, and short-format “pitch” presentations, where students research a topic themselves and present their findings concisely — training not just knowledge, but communication and critical thinking.

Personalized learning paths — supported by AI — will let students and residents focus their time on genuine knowledge gaps rather than repeating material they’ve already mastered.
